What to expect

If you enjoy the search for trout in well-maintained lakes and rivers, surrounded by unspoiled mountains, then this is the tour for you. Begin by checking your gear or renting what you need in Durban and then setting off for the countryside leaving the city-life behind you. After some river action on the second day, we take a 1-day break from fishing to visit Lesotho via the world-famous Sani Pass. The very next day we settle in to our mountain fishing lodge for three days in order to find some trophy trout. Our last day will start with an early fish before we head back to Durban with a stop along the way for a well-earned lunch.

Gear check and outfitting, Durban

Expert advice with local knowledge

The tour group will meet up in Durban in the morning and head straight to our local fishing outfitters. If you have everything you need then you might want to use this time to pick up some local knowledge of which patterns are working well under which conditions. However, if you’ve arrived in Durban with nothing more than a keen attitude, our experienced team will kit you out with everything on a rental basis. We’ll then head straight from there, towards the World Heritage recognised Drakensberg mountains.

DAY 2•A DAY ON THE RIVER

Outside the town of Underberg is where we’ll make our first casts into the running waters of the Umzimkulu river. The trout might not break the scales but they’ll be hard won and wild.

A cold beer at the world's highest pub, Lesotho

A passport stamp and a drive to remember

You'll know you’re on an African adventure on this part of the tour. A cold Lesotho beer awaits the brave at the highest pub in Africa after a very steep drive and over 20 hairpin bends. Sani Pass was built in the 1950s and remains an exhilarating drive in 4x4 vehicles with all the drama, scenery, and wild conditions expected of a pass at the altitude of 2,876 metres.

DAYS 4, 5, & 6•THE SEARCH FOR TROPHY TROUT

Vertical-line.jpg

After a drive into the Drakensberg mountains we’ll settle into our lodge for the next few days. If you’re keen to get fishing right away, then there’s a lake right in front of the lodge; otherwise you might want to take a seat by the fire and take in the mountain views. The next morning is an early rise as we set off for a full day of stillwater fishing on the search for some record-breaking fish. The region we fish is all on private farmland with lakes that hold the some of the largest stillwater trout ever caught in Africa, sometimes tipping the scales at over 5kg.
